Key Facts About Coffee Beans

Ever since the era of the Boston Tea Party, coffee has been one of America's most popular beverage choices; it is also universally known and enjoyed around the world and has been for hundreds of years. Coffee comes in a variety of different forms: green coffee beans, ground beans, whole beans, and instant coffee in countless flavors and roasts.

Though there are many different types of coffee beans, all beans can be categorized as coming from either Arabica or Robusta plants. Arabica coffee is considered to be of higher quality and 100% Arabica roasts are known to be some of the finest roasts you can find. Robusta coffee is of lesser quality and is often used as filler in roasts that are an Arabica/Robusta blend. Robusta coffee has much more caffeine in it than Arabica coffee. Coffee beans can also be categorized as being either red or green. Red beans typically have a more favorable aroma and are generally used for making lighter coffee.

Coffee plants have fruit that grows on them, but the fruit is not harvested and is in fact discarded. It is the seed inside the fruit that is valuable, for it becomes the bean after the seed is dried. After beans are hand-picked from the plant, they are washed and the berry is discarded. Then the beans are thoroughly dried. After the bean is dried it is roasted, and the bean grows to twice its original size. Roasting methods vary worldwide which is why there are countless coffee flavors and aromas.

Coffee beans may be ground by a machine (either in a production facility or in an at-home grinder) or by hand with the use of a mortal and pestle. Coffee can be ground either very coarsely or very finely depending on how it will be used (drip machine vs. coffee, for example). If you make coffee in a press you filter the grounds after combining them with boiling water. You may also steep coffee by preparing it as you would prepare hot tea. Of course, a popular method is using an electric coffee maker so that it will do the work for you.

By remembering these coffee facts, you will make an informed decision the next time you buy wholesale green coffee beans online.
