Spring RV Roof Inspection Tips

Roof inspection & maintenance tips (metal and rubber)

Spring is the time to get out the step ladder and take a good look at the RV roof condition. The membrane on a rubber roof is made of a very tough and durable material but it is fairly thin and can be punctured by a sharp object. Yes, you can carefully walk on the surface, however first check your shoes for embedded stones and such, that could do damage to the roof covering before stomping around up there. Underlying the rubber covering is usually a 3/16th to 1/2 inch plywood or particle board sheeting that evenly supports your weight. If your roof is metal, especially if it is the seamed type, (has crosswise seams every 48" or so), then lay a plywood strip or some wide boards (lengthwise) to walk on. This way the boards span the roof rafters and distribute your weight evenly on several supports.

Closely inspect the roof coat condition on every protruding fixture, any cracks or thin spots can be touched up with the appropriate material. If the roof coat is peeling or flaking in any way, then the old coating must be removed by scraping it off. On metal roofs I use a 1" wide scraper with a firm blade, like the ones used by auto technicians for scraping off old gaskets. For rubber roofs I made a plastic scraper that won't cut the membrane. If you heat the old coating with a hot air gun, it will come off fairly easily.

For metal roofs, use the aluminum roof coat, available in gray or white, and brush it on about 1/8" thick. Stir very thoroughly and apply on a warm day for the best results. For rubber, use elastomeric roof coating that is safe for rubber roofs or the special self leveling sealant sold at RV supply stores for this purpose. Never use a petroleum based product on a rubber roof as damage to the rubber membrane will result. Also, while silicone chalking has a place in the RV, it has no place on the roof. Silicone will not stick well and may damage the rubber, and on a metal roof it will adhere to some places and not others causing pockets that will trap water.

A Whole Lotta Latte Coffee

Can you imagine starting the day without a cup of hot coffee to perk you up? A breakfast get-together with friends or an early business meeting will not be complete without mugs of coffee being passed around.

Coffee if one of the most popular beverages in the world. Its origin can be traced back centuries ago, from Ethiopa where it made its way onto Egypt and Europe. From then on, the preparation of coffee has become a tradition as well as a craze in the modern pop culture.

This stimulant drink is made of coffee beans, roasted to perfection and blended into the perfect hot or cold drink. There are basically two kinds of coffee plants: Robusta and Arabica.

Arabica is the older kind of coffee, which many think tastes better than the other variant.

Robusta, which contains almost half as much caffeine as an Arabica is much bitter tasting than its predecessor.

A lot of farmers in Central America, Africa, and Asian countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia depend on coffee planting as their main source of livelihood. Brazil is the largest coffee-producing country in the world.

Here is a quick run-through on how this addicting beverage is prepared:

1. Coffee plants are grown and once they mature enough, they are picked and harvested.

2. Once the coffee beans or coffee cherries are picked, they are sorted and dried. This is where the term 'first pick' came from.

3. After the coffee beans are sorted, they are either dried or aged, depending on the variety of coffee.

4. Then, the beans are either roasted or ground to make instant coffee, or the beans are sold by themselves for coffee to be made in your own home.

There are a thousand and one ways to prepare your coffee. You can use instant coffee and dissolve it in hot water for a quick, reviving cup during a long day.

It can also be prepared using the good old coffee machine where ground coffee is steeped through a paper filter, combined with hot water, to come up with the perfect brew.

There is also the more complicated espresso machines, which give the drinkers an added punch to their caffeine fix. These machines combine steam or boiling water with the ground coffee beans to produce a stronger aroma and flavor.

'Go Loco over Latte Coffee'

When you go to any establishment specializing in coffee preparation, if you are not a coffee enthusiast, you might get confused with the unique language.

Terms like espresso, macchiato, java, espresso, shot, skim, whip, dry and foam are casually thrown around. They all relate to one's personal preference on how they like to take their daily caffeine fix.

Café latte is one popular flavor of gourmet coffee.

This refreshing drink has three layers. First, one serving of espresso is poured over the cup or mug. This is followed by a generous serving of steamed milk. Lastly, a spoonful or more of foamed milk or cream adds the final touch to the perfect cup of café latte.

No matter how you prefer to take your coffee, be it black, with cream, or gourmet like cafe latte with all the exquisite and creamy toppings, there is no doubt that this beverage's popularity will not wane anytime soon.

Effective Proposal Writing in Response to a Federal RFP

Looking for new business building techniques? Here are tips to effective proposal writing.

Follow instructions - So often well qualified companies submit proposals that are rejected simply because they do not follow instructions and add or delete requested information. Be sure to review if you are expected to attend a pre-bid meeting, submit multiple copies or place documents into separate folders.

For example: if you are requested to provide a DVD with materials, we suggest that you take the time to have the DVD have an auto-start feature with a menu so it is easy for the reviewer to see any documents or programs without having to search through file names.

Avoid using jargon or acronyms- Each industry has their own "language". If you are a company providing services to another industry, be sure to avoid using industry-specific or acronyms if possible. For example, my training business provides specialized services to all types of companies. I have to remind myself that these potential clients are not familiar with training jargon, so I have to provide an extra section to "educate" others to training terminology. If you have abbreviations, acronyms, or trade terms be sure to identify them. Be sure to spell out all acronyms at the first use.

Tip: Instead of attempting to start from square one, use a quick Google to locate definitions and use those to create a proposal glossary.

Proofread your proposal - If you have the time, and you are the only writer, prepare the proposal and let it rest for a day or two. Then you can go back and more easily edit your document. If possible, get another writer to proofread your proposal. As you are writing, be sure to turn on spell check and grammar review to immediately correct sentences. Plan on time to write, review, evaluate and tweak your document. Using the checklist of the response components, you can keep track of what you have completed and the other parts you need to complete.

Tip: Utilize as much of your pre-prepared chunks of information so you can concentrate your time in preparing the unique parts of the RFP response.

Participate in a proposal writing workshop - Even if you are a seasoned writer, it doesn't hurt to attend a writing workshop to sharpen your skills. Even if you learn just one technique, you will be empowered to know you are preparing proposals in the right way. Many agencies offer writing workshops locally including: SBA, PTAC centers, and SCORE. If times are slow in your industry, perhaps other companies could benefit from your skills to prepare proposals for them.

Tip: Do a Google search on proposal writing workshops in your local area.

Five Reasons Why an Online Yoga Teacher Certification Course May Be Right For You

There are many reasons why an instructor or intern would take a Yoga teacher training course online, or through correspondence. The following is a short list of reasons why established teachers and potential interns would consider online, or correspondence, Yoga teacher training programs.

1. Yoga instructors need non-contact continuing education units (CEUs) for existing Yoga teacher credentials. Continuing education is part of their re-certification requirements. CEUs keep educators up-to-date with the many changes in sports medicine and information about teaching students who have special needs.

2. Some interns take continuing education courses for their primary field, but are allowed elective credits for a related field, such as Yoga. These Yoga teacher interns often work in fields, such as medicine, Ayurveda, fitness, physical education, physical therapy, psychology, or social work. In this case, some of them are applying Yoga education toward their CEU requirements in their primary fields.

3. If one lives in a remote location, such as an island or a rural area, there may be no on-site Yoga intensive training near your home. In such cases, your intensive training may be precious, and well spent time, but the journey to your destination may create other hardships, with respect to extra expense and time away from obligations.

4. When we think of obligations, we might consider relationships, children, a spouse, or a job, which falls into this category. When considering Yoga training, some potential interns throw their hands into the air and exclaim, "I'm just too busy!"

This is a simplified response to overwhelming responsibilities. It is likely, that we enjoy our family, friendships, and our daily work, but a requirement of four weekly intensives, or more, per year, may be a stretch for most of us. Correspondence courses are self-paced, which means you fit your schooling into your scheduled time.

5. Affordability may be the most logical reason of all for joining a distance learning program for Yoga teachers. Each correspondence course is designed to guide you toward specific aspects of Yoga. Yet, spending all of your savings, or taking out a loan for your education, may not be necessary.

Online and correspondence courses usually cost a small fraction of a face-to-face training. On average, distance learning for Yoga teachers, costs only 5% to 20% of the cost of an onsite course. The cost of travel, housing, meals, hidden fees, books, educational materials, lost wages, and shutting your Yoga studio down for four weeks, can add up.

When considering your Yoga education, you should weigh up all of the factors and choose the option which best suits your needs. Each of us lives in a different set of circumstances. Yoga correspondence courses allow you to enjoy your life as it is, right now, and expand your knowledge in the best possible way.

How Should the Topic of Asana Be Covered in a Yoga Teacher Certification Course?

If you are going to teach Hatha Yoga classes, there are many subjects to cover, but asana (posture) is often the starting point of most Yoga teacher training courses. It could be debated that we should follow the Eight Limbed Path, as explained by Maharishi Patanjali, by reviewing the first two limbs (Yama and Niyama) before asana.

However, let's put this debate aside and discuss the details of teaching asana to the public. In the average 200-hour Hatha Yoga instructor training program, more than half of the course time is spent covering the intricacies of asana and pranayama (Yogic breathing techniques).

When a student is young, asana can change the body's physical appearance within a year or two. Sometimes, results are seen at a faster rate. The body can develop strength and flexibility within months, but depending upon age and health, physical appearance can take a while longer.

On top of this, there is no fear of creating a huge muscular body by practicing asana. This is one of the reasons why Yoga has become so popular among women. In general, most women do not want a huge muscular body, but they do desire a physically toned appearance.

Beneath the superficial physical appearance of a toned body, the energy channels open, the nervous system's functions are improved, and a natural detoxification process begins to take place. The reason so much attention goes into asana is because the positive results have made it very popular for students of every age.

Specific asana sequences can be recommended for particular ailments. If you have an ailment, illness, pain, or a pre-existing injury, and gradually receive positive results through asana practice, this physical aspect of Yoga can change your life without any side effects. To suddenly be pain free, after years of chronic pain, is a life changing event.

A competent teacher guides his or her students to avoid pain, common mistakes, and to master the best possible alignment. Each student's skeletal body is different. As a result, students should be encouraged to do their personal best, but to avoid making comparisons to others or engaging in self-criticism.

Demonstrating, cueing, and assisting are some of the tools a Yoga teacher uses to help students focus on inner awareness, pranayama technique during asana practice, and alignment. These teaching skills are developed within the certification process, but they continue to be improved as a Yoga teacher matures.

Snowboarding Helmet Safety Standards

Snowboarding helmets must have an ASTM, CE or Snell RS-98 certification. ASTM standards were determined by series of tests on models of helmet, including testing the potency of the retention system of the head covering under cold, hot and wet conditions.

Snowboard Helmets are produced by various manufacturers that are durable and stylish. Helmets have different feature and designs to meet the preferences and needs of any kind of rider. Guides on how to fit helmets -Important Factors to Consider in Buying Snowboarding Helmets:

1. Measuring Tape - your helmet dimension is determined by the perimeter of your head. The measuring tape is wrapped around the head in order to get the size of the helmet.
2. Align the face of the helmet on top of your eyebrows and grip both straps until the helmet is fitted well.
3. Unwanted gaps are not needed between your head and the lining of the helmet. The rear of the helmet must not touch the rear of the neck.
4. The head covering must fit nicely and snug.
5. Don't forget to use your snowboard goggles and make sure that they fit suitably on your helmet.

Helmets for snowboarding can protect the user from head trauma while on the slope. They are designed specifically for snowboarding to help lessen head damages associated with the sport. There three basic styles of helmets: Full Shell, Short Shell and Competetion

The full shell covers the whole head, while the short shell helmets offer lesser coverage but is less hulking. Competition helmets are suited to those who are planning to travel or race at very high speeds.

It is necessary for all helmets to be certified by any of the following certification systems:

- The Common European Nom (CEN 1077)
- The American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM F2040)
- Snell Memorial Foundation's Standard (RS-98)

These snowboard-specific head covering examined for numerous impacts, extreme situations (especially moisture and temperature) and velocity forces at various points of impact. At present it is good to stick to helmet specific for the sport in most situations.

Fitting a Snowboard Helmet

A nice fit is necessary when buying a snowboard protective hat. If it doesn't fit correctly, it will not give the advertised protection. Once the snowboarder had found a nice fit, the helmet can be tuned with padding system that comes typical with most helmets.

Snowboard Helmet Options

Most helmets may have audio system added after buying, but some snowboarders are taking into account the sound system before purchasing. Wireless systems are basically preferred over the wired ones. In some instances, it is dangerous listening to music while snowboarding on the slopes.

The possible advantage of this Snowboarding Helmet is very well known. Click here for more Info of Snowboarding Helmet

Key Facts About Coffee Beans

Ever since the era of the Boston Tea Party, coffee has been one of America's most popular beverage choices; it is also universally known and enjoyed around the world and has been for hundreds of years. Coffee comes in a variety of different forms: green coffee beans, ground beans, whole beans, and instant coffee in countless flavors and roasts.

Though there are many different types of coffee beans, all beans can be categorized as coming from either Arabica or Robusta plants. Arabica coffee is considered to be of higher quality and 100% Arabica roasts are known to be some of the finest roasts you can find. Robusta coffee is of lesser quality and is often used as filler in roasts that are an Arabica/Robusta blend. Robusta coffee has much more caffeine in it than Arabica coffee. Coffee beans can also be categorized as being either red or green. Red beans typically have a more favorable aroma and are generally used for making lighter coffee.

Coffee plants have fruit that grows on them, but the fruit is not harvested and is in fact discarded. It is the seed inside the fruit that is valuable, for it becomes the bean after the seed is dried. After beans are hand-picked from the plant, they are washed and the berry is discarded. Then the beans are thoroughly dried. After the bean is dried it is roasted, and the bean grows to twice its original size. Roasting methods vary worldwide which is why there are countless coffee flavors and aromas.

Coffee beans may be ground by a machine (either in a production facility or in an at-home grinder) or by hand with the use of a mortal and pestle. Coffee can be ground either very coarsely or very finely depending on how it will be used (drip machine vs. coffee, for example). If you make coffee in a press you filter the grounds after combining them with boiling water. You may also steep coffee by preparing it as you would prepare hot tea. Of course, a popular method is using an electric coffee maker so that it will do the work for you.

By remembering these coffee facts, you will make an informed decision the next time you buy wholesale green coffee beans online.

Yoga Certification Success

After successful graduation from a Yoga teacher training program, you may want to take the shortest track to success. Sometimes, this topic is not discussed during a teacher intensive, but most interns desire professional success.

Which techniques should a Yoga teacher master for personal growth and to help others achieve success in their lives? Let's take a look at factors which are very important to the professional growth of Yoga instructors.

Optimum communication is a primary skill for all Yoga teachers to possess. When we think about teaching Yoga in a class, we consider effective communication skills to be a must. We must be able to explain Yogic concepts, and ideas, in more than one way.

Developing the right tone, cueing skills, proper voice inflection, knowing when to assist, and demonstrating skills, all come into play. Yet, to teach anything, we must also be good listeners. Communication is a two way street, and it requires empathic listening skills.

Writing and telephone skills are also part of the skill set required to teach. Telephone communication, or a response to an Email, will often be your first contact with a new student. Addressing the needs of the public requires effective communication skills and compassion for people.

Although we teach self-worth and stress management skills to our students, we have to invest time in our regular personal Yoga practice to lead by example. If we invest most of our time in networking, marketing, advertising, and the business of Yoga, there is not much time left for our personal practice.

Therefore, appoint a regularly-scheduled Yoga practice time to work by yourself or with another teacher - to do otherwise, will affect your own health. This is an irony, which also happens to medical professionals: When one has a huge workload, one has little time left for personal health.

Life is full of challenges, but we should do our best to maintain a positive attitude, even in the worst of times. Some people will state that all obstacles and challenges are an illusion, but it is not easy to convince someone who is up to their ears in them.

To focus on negative thoughts, for too long, can create a reality that nobody wants. When any of us are confronted with obstacles, and challenges, it is always best to look for a solution within our Yoga practice. This prevents us from dwelling on negative thoughts. At the same time, there is gratification in developing problem-solving skills.

Top Jobs, Top Career Fields - Hot Trends For the Next Decade

Unless you've been living in a nuclear fallout shelter for the past year and a half, you know that we're all living in a brave new world. What was once up (a.k.a. the stock market) is now down, what was down (a.k.a. mortgage rates) is now up. So what does this mean for you and your future? Don't worry. Change means, among other things, new growth and new job opportunities. There are plenty of great jobs out there, and we'll be the ones to help you find them.

After doing some homework, we've put together the following criteria (concerning jobs, industries, and training) to help you decide what career will be best for you not just tomorrow, but for the next decade.

Top Jobs

Want to know which jobs are growing so fast you practically need to pull out your fire extinguisher to cool them off? Take a look at the following list of top 30 jobs put together by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS):

• Biomedical engineers
• Network systems and data communications analysts
• Home health aides
• Personal and home care aides
• Financial examiners
• Medical scientists (excluding epidemiologists)
• Physician assistants
• Skin care specialists
• Biochemists and biophysicists
• Athletic trainers
• Physical therapist aides
• Dental hygienists
• Veterinary technologists and technicians
• Dental assistants
• Computer software engineers, applications
• Medical assistants
• Physical therapist assistants
• Veterinarians
• Self-enrichment education teachers
• Compliance officers, except agriculture, construction, health and safety, and transportation
• Occupational therapist aides
• Environmental engineers
• Pharmacy technicians
• Computer software engineers, systems software
• Survey researchers
• Physical therapists
• Personal financial advisors
• Environmental engineering technicians
• Occupational therapist assistants
• Fitness trainers and aerobics instructors

So how does the BLS figure out which jobs will be growing the fastest not just next year, but all the way through 2018? In the November 2009 issue of the Monthly Labor Review where the study results were originally published, author Kristina Bartsch explains they look at a number of factors, including which sectors of the economy will grow (such as the service-providing industries), which sectors will shrink (such as goods-producing sectors), and what kind of vacancies will be created as the workforce ages, retires or changes careers. Best of all? Bartsch says that, of the 30 jobs listed above, many have fewer educational or training requirements. (Being a personal trainer, for example, does require certification, but not necessarily a bachelor's in kinesiology.) This means you don't have to get take out more student loans and get another degree to work in one the future's top jobs.

Top Fields

Ok, so now we know which jobs are growing the fastest. But if you're not into one of the 30 jobs listed above, there's still hope. You can look at the industries that are booming and watch for your dream job to pop up in that sector. For example, if you're a communications director and you know that health care is an industry that's leading the pack, you can look for communications positions at hospitals, medical research facilities, health care groups-anything related to the healthcare industry.

Some of the tried-and-true favorites include (you guessed it) health care, technology, and education. These industries always seem to be growing, to the point that some call them recession-proof. But with the Department of Labor's (DOL) January 6 announcement regarding $100 million in Energy Training Partnership Grants, you can factor green jobs in that equation too. (By the way, that $100 million is in addition to $55 million given in November 2009, all as part of the Recovery Act. The Department of Labor expects to release funding for two remaining green grant award categories over the beginning of 2010.)

The DOL also listed the following among the fastest-growing industries through 2018:

• Management, scientific, and technical consulting services
• Individual and family services
• Home health care services
• Specialized design services
• Personal care services
• Outpatient, laboratory, and other ambulatory care services
• Facilities support services
• Software publishers
• Independent artists, writers and performers
• Local government passenger transit (CTA, anyone?)
• Scientific research and development services
• Waste management and remediation
• Community and vocational rehabilitation services

Top Trends in Training

If you're in school, going back to school, or thinking about going back to school, now's a great time to fine-tune your training. According to Dianna Middleton's Wall Street Journal article "Landing a Job of the Future takes a Two-Track Mind," companies will soon be looking for candidates with not just a vertical skill set, but a horizontal one. Traditional degrees, like computer engineering, will need to be paired with study or experience in emerging fields, such as online marketing or social media. In other words, those top-dog systems analysts may also need to know how manage their company's Twitter accounts, and veterinary technicians may need to be crossed trained in data entry and system management. So if you're pursuing a degree, consider taking a few classes in a new and emerging field that will help boost your resume and your skill set.

The point is that there are lots of opportunities out there, and not just to make a few bucks, but to find a career that you love and that will fit your lifestyle.

Hot Bilingual Jobs of 2006 and How to Get Them

As corporations struggle to meet the needs of the country's booming population of Asian and Latino American consumers, bilingual jobseekers have a real advantage.

"My mother got paid less than co-workers from English speaking backgrounds; I find that the opposite is true for me." Says Orquidea Long, who works as a medical records technician in Eugene, Oregon.

Top bilingual job sites, like Bilingualcareer.com and LatPro, report that the medical field, specifically the pharmaceutical industry, currently has the fastest growing need for bilingual employees. Not a pharmacist or a doctor? Don't worry, the most common openings in these industries are in:

  • sales

  • customer service

  • accounts

  • auditing

  • marketing

  • consultancy
  • As a matter of fact, in most industries these sectors offer the most bilingual job openings; this gives bilingual jobseekers a diverse range of options to choose from, and room to advance.

Although Orquidea's job did not require official certification of her bilingual status, she says that she made sure to familiarize herself with industry terms in both languages before she applied.

"I grew up speaking Spanish around the house, but that doesn't mean that I instantly knew how to say 'donor' or 'cardiovascular'; I didn't even know some of these terms in English. But it's just like getting ready for any other job interview, it just takes a little research."

Before applying, Orquidea practiced her professional phone voice, positive demeanor, and other attributes that are considered assets in almost any job, bilingual or not. Although these skills are not connected to her bilingual status, Orquidea says that she still drew upon her cultural resources.

"I feel that my Latino heritage helps me at my job.
Mexican culture is very friendly, outgoing, and family oriented. My upbringing made me more outgoing, which helps me make our customers more comfortable. Obviously the same would be true of someone from any background who was raised in a large outgoing family; however in this case the majority of our clients are Hispanic, and I do have an innate understanding of specific cultural etiquette and other customs. It's really just a matter of taking what you have and turning it into an advantage."
